SEWERS OF SOUTHGATE
Southgate was
founded in -117 A.R. upon the ruins of Andramar
(foundation: -379; fall: -174), which in turn was founded upon
the ruins of Vinamar
(foundation: -484; fall: -422). Southgate also suffered its own
share of fires, destruction of buildings and constructions of new
ones, in the ensuing centuries since its foundation. It was
therefore upon these ruins, layered one on top of the other, that
king Pharaos III (of the old Nelanthian
dynasty) constructed Southgate's sewer system, in 655 A.R..
Of course, as the city grew and lived additional periods of
turmoil and war, the sewer system underwent cycles of expansion,
misrepair, destruction and reconstruction. All of these
historical factors since the foundation of Southgate lead us to
today's sewers of the city, which are a rather extensive and in
fact constitute a complex maze of corridors, open areas and dead
ends. Furthermore, the ancient, long-buried ruins of Vinamar,
Andramar and older incarnations of Southgate now lie underneath
the city's sewers, constituting what are known today as the undersewers.
Throughout the centuries since its creation, the sewer system of
Southgate has gradually become the home of typical sewer
inhabitants (rats, snakes, etc.), as well as less typical
creatures and monsters (e.g. crocodiles, sewer beasts, etc.).
Likewise, the sewers have often been used as a hiding place,
especially by rogues. Lastly, it is rumored that numerous tombs
and crypts may be found in the undersewers, and that these same
undersewers are populated by terrifying creatures and monsters,
including ghosts and restless spirits.
